It was Saturday, October 15th, 2005. Sweetest Day.
It was a beautiful day, I had the day off, and had nothing to do. Cool, right? Wrong! See, I know some of you consider Sweetest Day to be a Hallmark holiday, but not me. I am a romantic, and being alone on a love holiday makes me a sad fella.
So, I decided to go for a walk to clear my head and lighten my soul. What a day for a walk it was. The sun was warm on my face. The wind was cool on my back. The leaves were crunching under my feet. Everywhere I went, life was happening. People walking dogs. Families working in their yards. Lovers holding hands. The shops were busy... Shops, well, now, this turned into a longer walk than planned. Oh well, I deserved a treat. I headed for my favorite ice cream parlor, Stroh's.
As I got close, I was still in my head and not paying enough attention to my surroundings. As I pulled the door open, this girl slipped in front of me. She giggled out a little thank you and headed for the door. In that moment, time froze. She... She... She had eyes that looked into my soul. She had a voice like a choir of angels. She smelled like a spring day and a winter night. She made everything else go out of focus. She looked like my forever.
I snapped to and followed her in and got in line behind her. She was dancing left and right, looking in the freezer at all her options. She offered to let me go ahead, but I couldn't. She was just too cute trying to make up her mind. She finally ordered a double scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone. I watched her glide past me and take a seat by the door. I ordered my double of Blue Moon and sat at the table adjacent to her. I wanted to be sure I could see her and she could see me.
I was trying to remember all of those eighties pickup movies and come up with a clever greeting. You don't just walk up to a girl like this. She must have seen what I was up to, or maybe she was just teasing me when she spoke, "Is that your sweets for Sweetest Day?" Without missing a beat, I replied, "No, you are." Stupid! Too late now. But she smiled, so I flashed her the eyebrows. She smiled again. Alright!
I moved over to her table. Her name was Kathleen. Prettiest name ever! She and I talked and enjoyed our ice cream for a little longer than we should have. When we left, mine was just a bowl of blue soup. Good news, we left together.
Nine years later, I still get to open the door for her at that same ice cream parlor. She still spends forever looking at every option just to get that same double scoop. We still sit at that same table. She still makes everything else go out of focus when I look at her. She makes every day the sweetest day. I love the girl.
